CeBIT 2013 Day 2

Today was a better one for CeBIT. Much more visitors on the fairground. The halls with the classic highlights were nearly as crowded, as on other CeBITs in the past. Hall 4 and 2 had the typical "there is lots of people at the booth" feeling and the big IT partners had the same impressive stand design as ever.

Deutsche Telekom's booth is quite spectacular, as there is more than one large stage with live discussions and demos. Feels nearly as at IFA, even if the focus was clearly more on B2B presentations.

One big mass market announcement was the "WLAN TO GO" cooperation with fon, which Telekom expects to grow up to over 2 million active hotspots in Germany at it's customer premises. We will all see how this thing develops.

Even political presence at the DT booth.

Fon today has over 7 million hotpots online, all based on shared broadband connected access points.

These will be the new router series supporting the WLAN TO GO feature.

SAP customers all over the place...

Crowds also at the Microsoft booth. Besides their office suites they had some first samples of surface pro devices and masses wanting at least to get their hands on it.

The surface devices - at least to me - feel a little bit like the netbooks a while ago, but with a touchscreen in the main focus. Or not? There is still some mixed feeling during the usage of these more fullscreen oriented touch apps and the classical multi-window desktop mode. Still cannot decide, which one I prefer.

Lots of touch enabled designs try to convince customers of Windows 8. We will have to wait and see, what the future will bring for these PC based systems. will it need Windows 9 to succeed?

Hall 2 was fully packed, too. Big IT still got its customers at CeBIT.

Samsung at CeBITwas focussing on its business offerings. So no new devices, no Galaxy IV.

IBM with its classical design and lots of suits ;-).

Like a flashback to the good od IT times.

But with new messages. But what do they want to say? I did not really get it...

But the wheather was phantastic and allowed to stay outside for while without freezing ;-)

Shareconomy for cars. Just get one and enjoy.

Mobile internet a new need to have even during bus travels. www.publicexpress.de is offering regular routes / connections.

Nice idea to call it "Internet Rescue Service"

After all these more generic impressions lets get to some real stuff. Connected Home scenarios were to be seen nearly everywhere. Just try to collect it here under a consistent story line.

Different consortia and companies showed their visions and products.

Digitus shows its updated OptiView product line. The surveillance webcams are called to be setup in a minute realized through a simplified QR-based setup. The cams directly connect to the cloud without any need to change router settings etc. A truly Internet of Everything app using home devices and cloud service elements.

More general demos by different players.

Miele is active in different consortia. With Telekom's Qivicon and the EEBUS initiative, a more energy related initiative.

Rockethome is active together with different players, too. VDE more related to energy management, Telekoms Qivicon more on the connected home scenarios. They all need some smart software components to coordinate sensors and apps.

B.E.G offers plug an play solutions from KNX to wireless smoke detectors

Digitalstrom invented the tiny smart direct AC connected modules. With them you can switch and dimm and also collect power consumption data.

Tablet and smartphone apps to control the digitalstrom elements.

Fully wireless control based on Z-Wave

If you want to develop your own solution, a RaZberry PI modul is available, too. This more programming oriented platform is much smarter as the well known ARDUINO but was missing its modularity at the beginning. Various shields are becoming available as the amount of the PIs is really big with hundreds of thousands already sold.

As already mentioned, Deutsche Telekom is still developing Qivicon, a smart home gateway as a platform together with cooperation partners so that customers can combine different sensors and actors into one consistent system.

Even UIs for Smart TVs are under development.

A first demo video from the actual CeBIT booth is on YouTube. Even if the clip is in German, it shows some nice sensors and actors "in action".

An advanced combination of the Qivicon gateway and integrated apps is demoed at the Telekom Laboratories booth in hall 9. It combines telephony, smart lightning and Entertain STB control. Incoming calls show up in different colors depending on known (green lightning) or unknown (red lightning) numbers. If you accept a call, timeshift of the running TV programm is started as long as the call is active. After the call termination the user can restart the TV transmission with one click on the remote. Nice demo and fully working with live TV.

This years code_n focussed on green scenarios and had some more connected home solutions in the finalist round.

Greenpocket - www.greenpocket.de - develops software to allow smart control scenarios.

These nice cubes are part of the hom.ee solution. At first they have taken on the AVM router platform to connect their smart USB wireless hubs with their smartphone / tablet apps.

A open source based development from panstamp, a spanish solutions provider, which had created a new wireless protocol.

A curious TI smartwatch to drive the control hub. See the embedded YouTube video.

Love his delight when controlling his gateway with his watch.

A complete different world opened up at the m2m pavillions.

Remote monitoring of heavy construction machines enabling smarter inspection cycles and maintenance.

Full solution providers help to start first trials and deployments based on m2m solutions.

And the modules get smaller and smaller

Ruggedized solution for advanced outdoor scenarios.

The technologies are developing fast, mobile carriers help to enable sim based platform or full service solutions.

More green technologies to experience. Yes, you could even try out some very different ebikes in motion.

This years partner country is Poland. They haver their own stage and do live streams.

Another complete services driven m2m solution provided by combisec. A fully integrated service combining smoke detection and surveillance features.

Not to forget one the cheapest gadgets on the floor by pearl.de. Just 80 Euros and its yours!

With full built in mobile phone function and lots of other fuzz.

Still don't know for sure, what they were selling here. Think it was a game promotion.

iHealth is a brand well placed in Apple stores offering excellent designed health and baby care or surveillance solutions.

Let's round up with the other startup ideas at code_n

Organictransit means use solar and your own muscles.

Or better fly a volocopter. The demo is not able to carry people so far, but the concept may be able to be scaled up.

Or share your bus.

... or your car...

Some first concepts to better control and leverage smart grids.

A Brasilian startup building LED based communication solutions, like the doorlock, that can be openede with a smartphones flashlight and the corresponding app.

Other green ideas try to keep your locally produced solar energy at your own premises by storing it until needed. Impressive values for capacity available at sonnenbatterie.de. So may all your locally produced energy just be used at your home.

Another community-driven startup enables to monitor your solarpanel recharges of your own gadgets and forward the results to social networks.

More info at changers.com

Another Brasilian startup installs m2m enabled sensors at the waterpumps and sells the monitoring data access to the local water companies. All the technical installations are operated by the startup. The water companies just pay for the acces to their quite relevant data sources.

Seems we have reached nearly the end of all my pics. So lets wait and see how the world will be changing the way we all consume energy at home ;.-)

W-Lan in the wall: First universal wall mount I saw.

And as another trend more an more mobile 3G/4G WiFi hotspot devices are developed ant marketed. This one also got a 2013 product design award.

And the weather was really warm and nice this year....

Just one last thing: AVM showed a nice solution for cable broadband solutions. But just feeding the encryption free channels to the local network they enabled PC and smartphone / tablet based viewing of these channels. Nearly all private SD channels can be accessed even at Kabel Deutschland, as the plan to follow Unity Media with stopping the encryption of the private digital SD channels.

Puh, think I am done for tonight...
